What is 12/6 x 3-5?

If following order of operations (PEMDAS) you would multiply 6 times 3 and which is 18 and then divide by 12 but this will not give you a whole number?

Divide first since you do it left to right

so 12/6 = 2
2 x 3 - 5
6 - 5
=1

you divide 12 by 6 first, your supposed to go in order from left to right then multiply by 3 then subtract by 5

I am taking a Algebra class right now myself and this is something that another student posted and it has helped me.. I hope it will help you.

Please----Parenthesis
Excuse---exponents
My---multiplication
Dear--division

Aunt---addition

Sally--subtraction

. Do all calculations within grouping symbols first before operations outside.
2. Evaluate all exponential expressions.
3. Do all multiplication and division in order from left to right.
4. Do all additions and subtractions in order from left to right.

Another great way to remember this is the phrase "Gee Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally", from high school:
Grouping, Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. One just has to remember that you do the multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction in order from left to right, it does not explain that in the phrase.

Why is it important that you follow the steps rather than solve the problem from left to right?

It is important to follow the previous steps to end with the answer that was intended for the problem. If you were to try and solve it in a different manner there is a strong possibility that you will end with the incorrect solution.

To solve the expression 12/6 x 3 - 5, let's break it down step by step using the order of operations (also known as PEMDAS or BIDMAS):

1. Parentheses: There are no parentheses in the expression.
2. Exponents: There are no exponents in the expression.
3. Multiplication and Division: Perform any multiplication or division from left to right.

- First, divide 12 by 6, which gives you 2.
- Then, multiply 2 by 3, which gives you 6.

So far, 12/6 x 3 becomes 2 x 3.

4. Addition and Subtraction: Perform any addition or subtraction from left to right.

- Finally, multiply 2 by 3, which gives you 6.
- Then, subtract 5 from 6, which gives you 1.

The answer to the expression 12/6 x 3 - 5 is 1.
