Why do you think freedom and independence were so important to the colonists?

Many eloquent authors had written convincingly of the right of man to be free and independent.

Although most colonists considered themselves English men, they had lived in America for over 100 years. That was certainly long enough to develop an American culture that prized freedom and independence.
