Fences are effective means to keep people outside.

There are plenty of opinions about this topic. Read lots and read carefully.

My questions:

1. If a wall (which exists on the border in some areas south of San Diego, for example) doesn't keep people from coming into the country illegally, why would a fence across all 1800 miles be successful?

2. Would a fence interfere with normal migration routes of any animals indigenous to any particular region?

I'm sure you can think of other questions, reasons, counterarguments, etc. Let us know what you come up with.

To understand how a border fence can potentially reduce illegal immigration, let's break it down into a few key points:

1. Physical Deterrence: The presence of a fence on the border acts as a physical barrier, making it more difficult for individuals to cross over illegally. Fences can be designed with various features like height, barbed wire, or other deterrents, making unauthorized entry challenging.

2. Psychological Deterrence: A well-built fence symbolizes a strong commitment to border security. It may discourage individuals from attempting to cross illegally, as the perception of a difficult or impassable barrier can act as a psychological deterrent. This can dissuade potential immigrants from undertaking the risky journey.

3. Loss of Opportunity: A border fence can limit the opportunities for human smugglers to operate. When a fence is in place, organized crime networks find it more challenging to transport people across the border. This reduction in smuggling opportunities can decrease the incentives for individuals to attempt illegal entry.

4. Channeling Migration Flows: By strategically placing fences in specific areas along the border, immigration authorities can guide migration patterns towards designated entry points. This allows for better control and management of immigration processes, ensuring that individuals are properly screened, documented, and accounted for.

5. Enhanced Border Patrol Effectiveness: A border fence can complement the work of border patrol agents by providing them with additional time and resources to detect and intercept illegal border crossings. A physical barrier allows agents to focus on specific areas, increasing their chances of apprehending individuals attempting to enter illegally.

When writing your essay, you can use these points to explain how a border fence can be beneficial in reducing illegal immigration. Remember to back up your arguments with statistics, case studies, or expert opinions to provide a well-rounded perspective on the issue.
