Many immigrants who came to the United States expected to find streets paved with gold and easy oppurtuinities to make their fortunes. What were they most likely to find?

Can I get a link to help, or something? Thanks

When?

Some of my ancestors came into this country in the 1870s. What they found was certainly different from what people found in the very early 1800s or the very early 1900s.

Please clarify.

Around the time of the civil war.

Into which state? What people found in the Southern states was quite different from what they might have found in the Northern states.

Then you must consider which state the immigrants entered. There were both similarities and differences from state to state.

I don't know, that's all the information I've been given. Just generally...

Then you need to learn to use Google and search again and again, if need be.

I went to www.google.com and entered georgia for immigrants in 1860s and here are the results:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=georgia+for+immigrants+in+1860s

You can find different results by altering the search words.

Read lots. Read carefully. Take good notes, including the websites of where you find information you plan to use.

Also ... do you have access to a public library? Even if you go to the library only once to get a library card, you may be able to get the passwords, etc., to access the huge databases most libraries subscribe to these days. You'll often find better information through them than through general searches on the Internet.

Here is an example -- one college's library website (but public libraries usually have many of these, too): (Broken Link Removed)
Click on Electronic Resources/Databases to see the different databases this particular college provides for its students. EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and Facts.com are among the largest and best.

What does your library provide? That's a good place to research.

Certainly! To find information on what immigrants to the United States during a particular time period were most likely to find, you can browse through historical records, books, or online resources that provide insights into the experiences of immigrants during that time. One helpful source you can explore is the Library of Congress website, specifically their immigration and ethnic heritage collection.

Here is the link to the Library of Congress Immigration collection:
https://www.loc.gov/topics/immigration/

This collection offers a range of resources, including photographs, personal narratives, historical documents, and digitized books that provide a comprehensive view of the immigrant experience in the United States. By exploring the collections related to specific time periods or immigrant groups, you can gain a deeper understanding of what immigrants were most likely to find when they arrived in the United States.

Remember to select a relevant time period or specific immigrant group to find information aligned with your question.
