what is the pH of a solution prepared by adding 20.00 mL 0f a 0.10 M acetic acid and 10.00 mL of 0.10 M sodium acetate

b) what is the pH after the addition of 1.0 mL of 0.10 M HCL to 15.00 mL of the solution?

c)what is the pH after the addition of 1.0 mL of 0.10 M NaOH to 15 mL of the original solutiom....

i don't really need a im pretty sure my answer is right but should i really be getting the same answer for b and c?

No, b and c should not be the same but I'm starting to work it out to see what difference it makes.

I get something like 4.44 for a, 4.39 for b, and 5.33 for c but those are quickie numbers. Check them out.

ok thank you:)

To determine the pH of the solution, you need to calculate the concentration of the acidic and basic components of the solution and use the appropriate equation based on the dissociation equilibrium of the acid.

1. Calculate the moles of acetic acid (CH3COOH) and sodium acetate (CH3COONa):

Moles of acetic acid = volume (in L) × concentration (in mol/L)
Moles of acetic acid = 20.00 mL × 0.10 mol/L = 0.002 mol

Moles of sodium acetate = volume (in L) × concentration (in mol/L)
Moles of sodium acetate = 10.00 mL × 0.10 mol/L = 0.001 mol

2. Calculate the total moles of acetic acid and sodium acetate:

Total moles = moles of acetic acid + moles of sodium acetate
Total moles = 0.002 mol + 0.001 mol = 0.003 mol

3. Calculate the concentration of the acetate ion (CH3COO-) in the solution:

Concentration of acetate ion = moles of sodium acetate / total volume (in L)
Concentration of acetate ion = 0.001 mol / (20.00 mL + 10.00 mL) / 1000 = 0.033 mol/L

4. Use the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation to calculate the pH:

pH = pKa + log(concentration of acetate ion / concentration of acetic acid)

The pKa value for acetic acid is 4.76. Plug in the values:

pH = 4.76 + log(0.033 mol/L / 0.10 mol/L)

Do the logarithmic calculation to determine the pH.

The pH of the solution is the result of the calculation.

Please note that the calculation assumes the dissociation of acetic acid follows the approximate 1:1 ratio with sodium acetate and does not consider any other factors that may affect the pH.
