how do empirical and molecular formulas differ

The empirical formula is the simplest whole number formula that can be written while the molecular formula is the whole number formula for the molecule. For example, the empirical formula for glucose is CH2O while the molecular formula is C6H12O6. Note that the molecular formula is ALWAYS a multiple of the empirical formula. For example, we could have written the molecular formula for glucose as (CH2O)6.
