Three things I have learned about quality and performance in the context of healthcare are:

Hospitals are financially incentivized to focus on improving quality indicators such as patient satisfaction, safety, and clinical outcomes. This initiative has prompted hospitals to implement CQI strategies to enhance the delivery of care and achieve better patient outcomes.

2. Standardization and Evidence-Based Practice: Standardization refers to the establishment of consistent procedures and protocols based on evidence-based practice. By following standardized protocols, healthcare organizations can ensure that care is delivered consistently and according to best practices, resulting in improved quality and patient safety.

For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed surgical safety checklists that are used globally to minimize the occurrence of preventable errors during surgeries. These checklists standardize the surgical process, ensuring that critical safety steps are followed in a systematic manner. Implementing such evidence-based practices and standard protocols helps healthcare providers reduce errors, complications, and improve patient outcomes.

3. Patient-Centered Care: Patient-centered care is an approach that focuses on meeting patients' individual needs, preferences, values, and empowerment in decision-making. It recognizes that healthcare is not solely about addressing medical conditions but also about understanding and responding to patients' unique circumstances.

For instance, the Planetree model of patient-centered care emphasizes holistic care and creating healing environments that promote patients' emotional well-being. By prioritizing patient preferences, providing education, and involving patients in care decisions, health outcomes and patient satisfaction can be significantly improved. This approach has led to the development of health care quality programs that emphasize patient-centeredness, such as patient experience surveys and shared decision-making initiatives.

The impact of these three aspects on the evolution of health care quality programs has been substantial. They have promoted a culture of continuous improvement, encouraged the use of evidence-based practices, and shifted the focus towards patient-centered care. As a result, there has been an increased emphasis on measuring and improving quality outcomes, reducing medical errors, and enhancing patient satisfaction in healthcare settings. These changes have ultimately led to better healthcare delivery and improved patient outcomes.
