I am getting stuck on graphing equations.

when something says y=1/2x-4.....I am supposed to put in numbers for x. however, I am stuck on the concept of how to divide by the fraction. Lets say x=2

y=1/2(2)-4

I am totally stumped on if I need to make two into a fration or mulitply two by the denominator.

I think you mean

y = x/2 - 4

then if x = 2
y = 1-4 = -3

awesome. thank you sir!

how would you graph 12x-3y=7 and x=2+13y?

Understanding how to divide by a fraction can be confusing at first, but it becomes easier with practice. In the equation y = (1/2)x - 4, let's substitute x = 2 and determine y.

To divide a number by a fraction, you can multiply the number by the reciprocal (or inverse) of the fraction. In this case, the fraction is 1/2.

To find the reciprocal of a fraction, you swap the numerator and denominator. For 1/2, the reciprocal is 2/1, which can be simplified to just 2.

So, when we substitute x = 2 into y = (1/2)x - 4, we have:

y = (1/2)(2) - 4

Now, instead of diving by 1/2, we multiply by its reciprocal, which is 2:

y = (1/2)(2) - 4
= (1 * 2)/(2) - 4
= 2/2 - 4
= 1 - 4
= -3

Hence, when x = 2, y = -3.
