Each of the following numbers was supposed to be rounded to two significant figures. For each one below, decide whether it was correctly rounded or not, and for those that were incorrectly rounded, correct them

(a) 1.249 X 10 to the 3rd power. They said it rounded to 1.3 X 10 to the third power.

Im pretty sure this is correct but i only have one submission and i need help:)

thanks

No it is not correct. 0.049 does not round up to 0.1

where did you get 0.049?

Look at the last two digits of your problem. 0.249 does not round up to 0.3

oh so is it incorrect and the answer is 1.2 or is it 1.20? does the second answer have 3 sig figs?

why does KMnO4 act as self indicator in titration invoulving KMnO4?

ernest y did u post that on my question? it doesn't ever pertain to my question

To determine whether the number was correctly rounded or not, we need to understand the rules for rounding to two significant figures.

In this case, the number is 1.249 x 10^3. When rounding to two significant figures, we look at the digit immediately after the second significant figure.

If that digit is 5 or greater, we round up the last significant figure. If the digit is less than 5, we keep the last significant figure as it is.

In this case, the digit immediately after the second significant figure is 4, which is less than 5. Therefore, we do not round up and keep the last significant figure unchanged.

So, the correct rounding for 1.249 x 10^3 to two significant figures would be 1.2 x 10^3, not 1.3 x 10^3 as stated.

So, in this case, the rounding was not correct and the correct rounded value should be 1.2 x 10^3.
