4(x+4)=7(x-2)

Can someone show me how to solve this. I have been working on it for about 1 hour and I can not get each side to match.

you have to solve for x,, here are the steps: =)

(1)distribute the 4 on x+4 and the 7 on x-2, getting 4x+16=7x-14 (i.e. just multiply 4 by x and 4 by 4 to get 4x+16 on left side, and do the same on other side)

(2)combine similar terms, to simplify, transpose the term 7x on left side, and 16 on the other side, but to do that you have to change their signs (to opposite),, therefore you will get 4x-7x=-14-16 (take note of the new signs of 7x and 16 --> it changed from positive to negative); this equation can be written also in -3x=-30

(3)lastly, divide both sides by -3 (the coefficient or the number placed before the variable); -3 divided by -3 is one, and -30 divided by -3 is 10, thus x=10
