I'm attempting to schedule a road test so I can obtain a driver license in New York State. I am currently 17 years old and have a learner permit.

Is it mandatory to take either a 5 hour pre-licensing course or a driver education course? I've done some research but it's left me confused.
My dad originally thought that any kind of formal education (i.e. driver's ed) wasn't necessary to take a road test, but it seems things have changed.

In order to schedule a road test and obtain a driver's license in New York State, it is mandatory for individuals who are under 18 years old to complete a driver education course or a 5-hour pre-licensing course. This is a recent change in the requirements.

To schedule your road test, you'll need to follow a few steps:

1. Complete the required driver education course or a 5-hour pre-licensing course. The driver education course is typically offered by a private driving school and consists of both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. The 5-hour pre-licensing course is a classroom-based program that covers essential driving knowledge and skills.

2. Once you have completed either of these courses, you will receive a certificate of completion.

3. With your learner's permit and certificate of completion, you can schedule your road test online through the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website or by calling their office.

4. At the road test, you will demonstrate your driving skills to a DMV examiner. If you pass the test, you will be issued a driver's license.

It's important to note that if you are 17 years old and have a learner's permit but have not completed either the driver education course or the 5-hour pre-licensing course, you will not be able to schedule a road test.

I recommend checking the New York State DMV website or contacting your local DMV office for the most up-to-date information and specific requirements.
