What is the theme of West Side Story?

A. The prejudice is evil.
B. All is fair in love and war
C. Any friends you have are okay
D. Get revenge for everything
E. None of the above

I think C and D are just wrong and B is not true at all. I would say it's A as it was the prejudice which led to all the disasters at the end of the story. So is choice A correct?
Thanks in advance.

Possibly. Read through these and see if you'll stay with A or choose E.

I'll vote for "None of the above."

I still think it's A...

Ms. Sue, could you please tell me why you think choice A is not a theme of the West Side Story? No offence. Just want to know your opinion on that. Thank you so much : )

Ms. Sue will answer you in due time. I think she's right to choose E because there is no true evil in this story. Prejudice, yes, but no true evil.

Yes. Writeacher and I agree that this story does not have true evil.

Okay, Thanks again! : )

Yes, you are correct. The theme of West Side Story is A. The prejudice is evil. Prejudice and discrimination play a significant role in the story, leading to the tragic ending. The conflict between the Jets and the Sharks, two rival street gangs, is fueled by racial and ethnic prejudices, ultimately resulting in violence and death.

To arrive at the correct answer, you analyzed the events in the story and identified the main recurring idea or message. This process involves understanding the plot, character development, and underlying themes. By examining the consequences of prejudice in West Side Story, you were able to determine that choice A best represents the central theme.

It's important to note that analyzing literature and determining themes can be subjective, and different readers may have different interpretations. However, your reasoning behind your choice aligns with the intended themes of the musical. Well done!
