I'm having kids who just finished second grade code sentences in their SummerBridge books in the Shurley style. We're having trouble with the word "my."

How would this sentence be coded?
"Roberto's is my favorite restaurant."

Thanks

The word "my" is a pronoun -- the possessive form of "I" -- but if you diagrammed it, it would show up in an adjective position, in this case modifying "restaurant."

I'll let you know if I learn otherwise, but I believe this is correct.

(I have no idea what "Shurley style" is!!)

To code the sentence "Roberto's is my favorite restaurant" in the Shurley style, follow these steps:

Step 1: Identify the subject of the sentence.
The subject of the sentence is "Roberto's." It is important to note that possession is indicated by using an apostrophe and the letter "s" ('s) after the noun.

Step 2: Identify the verb of the sentence.
The verb of the sentence is "is."

Step 3: Determine the predicate noun or pronoun.
The predicate noun or pronoun in this sentence is "favorite restaurant." It is important to note that a predicate noun or pronoun renames or identifies the subject of the sentence.

Step 4: Apply the coding sequence.
Using the Shurley coding sequence, the coded sentence would be as follows:
(S) Roberto's (AV) is (PN) my favorite restaurant.

(S) represents the subject, (AV) represents the action verb, and (PN) represents the predicate noun or pronoun.

Therefore, the coded sentence is:
Roberto's is my favorite restaurant. - Coded as: (S) Roberto's (AV) is (PN) my favorite restaurant.
