what point represents the 3rd quartile in the box and whisker plot?

. = point

.5, .25, .35, .50, .70

the numbers will be arrange like this if it was in a box and whisker plot

Arrange the numbers in ascending order:

.5, .25, .35, .50, .70
The median is the middle number of the whole set, namely 0.35.

The third quartile is the median of the upper half, namely the median of
{0.35, 0.50, 0.70}

Can you find the third quartile?

is it .35

We have already worked out the median as 0.35.

Now we need to find the third quartile, which is the median of the upper half of numbers, namely the median of
{0.35, 0.50, 0.70}

Can you give it another try?

is it .50

Correct!

Now can you find the first quartile?

um .35

Correct, with corrections on my part.

Sorry, I did not realize that the numbers have not been put in order!
Instead of
.5, .25, .35, .50, .70
it should be put in order as:
0.25, 0.35, 0.5, 0.50, 0.70

So the median is the middle number of the five, or 0.5.

The upper quartile is the middle number of the upper half, {0.5, 0.50, 0.70} and your answer of 0.50 is still correct.

For the first quartile, you need to find the median (middle number) of the lower half of the numbers, {0.25, 0.35, 0.5}, so 0.35 is also correct.

To find the point that represents the 3rd quartile in the box and whisker plot, we need to understand what quartiles are and how they are calculated.

In a data set, quartiles divide the data into four equal parts, each containing 25% of the data. The 1st quartile (Q1) represents the point below which 25% of the data falls, and the 3rd quartile (Q3) represents the point below which 75% of the data falls.

Based on the given numbers: 0.5, 0.25, 0.35, 0.50, 0.70, we need to arrange them in ascending order:

0.25, 0.35, 0.50, 0.50, 0.70

Now, we can find the 3rd quartile by locating the value that is above 75% of the data. Since 75% of the data falls below Q3, we need to find the point that is at or above the 75th percentile.

In this case, the number 0.50 is at the 75th percentile. Therefore, in the box and whisker plot, the point that represents the 3rd quartile (Q3) will be located at 0.50.
