  1. I believe the answer is a, the slowest step in the reaction. In a three step synthesis, suppose the first step is the slow one and the other two are fast. Most of the time will be taken up by the first step. In another case of a three step synthesis, suppose the third step is the slow one but steps 1 and 2 are very fast. Again, most of the time will be taken up by the slow step, in this case, the last (third slow) one. OK?
