Hi,

How can you charge an electroscope negatively? Is it by using a positively charged rod? Can someone please help me?
Thank you :)

To charge an electroscope negatively, you can follow these steps:

1. Start with an uncharged electroscope. An electroscope typically consists of a metal rod with a conducting ball or leaves at the top, enclosed in a glass or plastic case.

2. Rub a positively charged object, such as a glass rod, with a cloth or fur. This process transfers some of the positive charge from the object to the cloth or fur.

3. Bring the positively charged rod close to the metal rod of the electroscope, without touching them. This will induce the separation of charges in the electroscope.

4. As the positively charged rod gets closer, the negatively charged electrons in the metal rod are repelled, moving away from the rod's top and towards the leaves or ball.

5. Finally, remove the positively charged rod. The electrons will remain on the leaves or ball, resulting in a net negative charge and a negatively charged electroscope.

It is important to note that an electroscope does not become negatively charged by directly using a positively charged rod. Rather, the positively charged rod induces the separation of charges in the electroscope, causing it to accumulate a net negative charge.
