Hi,

How can you charge an electroscope negatively? Is it by using a positively charged rod? Can someone please help me?
Thank you :)

You need a negatively charged rod. Touch it to the terminal on top, and some of the excess electrons should flow to the leaves of the scope, which will separate.

The charge of a plastic or rubber rod when rubbed with fur is negative.

To charge an electroscope negatively, you can use a positively charged rod. Here's how you can do it:

1. Start with an uncharged electroscope. An electroscope is a simple device that can detect the presence and type of electric charge.

2. Bring a positively charged rod near the electroscope. The rod can be made of a material like glass or plastic.

3. Without touching the electroscope, bring the positively charged rod close to the top metal plate of the electroscope. The positive charge on the rod will induce a negative charge in the electroscope through a process called electrostatic induction.

4. Allow the positive charge on the rod to repel the electrons in the electroscope. As a result, the top metal plate of the electroscope will become negatively charged.

5. Remove the positively charged rod from the vicinity of the electroscope. The negative charge on the electroscope will remain, causing the metal leaves to separate.

It's important to note that while the positively charged rod induces a negative charge on the electroscope, the electroscope itself does not gain any negative charges. Instead, the charges are redistributed within the electroscope, resulting in an excess of negative charges.

It's always recommended to use caution and follow proper safety guidelines when conducting experiments involving electricity.
