with a pure substance how can you tell whether it is a compound or an element?

  1. With a mass spectrometer that shows you the elements that are present. There are other ways. Appearance, electrical conductivity and density can be used to identify many solid elements. There are only about 85 solid naturally occuring elements at room temperature.
