3rd grade

The jacksons have pet dogs named Beau and Max. Beau is 2 years older than Max. The sum of thier ages are 16 years. How old is Beau? How old is Max?

Beauage-2=Maxage

Beauage + Maxage=16

substitute...
Beauage + (beauage-2)=16

take if from here...

Thank you very much

Since you are not learning algebra methods yet in third grade, write down combinations of two numbers that add up to 16, like 12 and 4. Then pick the combinatiuon for which the numbers differ by 2.

Beau is 9 years old

Max is 7 years old.

You can probably get this by trial and error, but I got it by getting half of 16 (8) and adding 1 to the number and subtracting one from the number, like this:

8+8=16

8+1=9
8-1=7
(1+1=2, the difference of their ages)

So, one of them is 9, the other is 7.

Get it?

i want to know what time it is

To find the ages of Beau and Max, let's set up a system of equations.

Let's say that Beau's age is B years and Max's age is M years.

We are given that Beau is 2 years older than Max, so we can write the equation: B = M + 2.

We also know that the sum of their ages is 16 years, so we can write the equation: B + M = 16.

Now we have a system of equations:

B = M + 2
B + M = 16

To solve this system of equations, we can use the method of substitution.

From the first equation, we can substitute B with (M + 2) in the second equation:

(M + 2) + M = 16

Simplifying this equation, we get:
2M + 2 = 16

Subtracting 2 from both sides:
2M = 14

Dividing both sides by 2:
M = 7

So Max is 7 years old.

To find Beau's age, we can substitute M with 7 in the first equation:

B = 7 + 2

B = 9

So Beau is 9 years old.
