Title: The War That Shouldn't Have Continued

What does a war hero receive upon returning home from war? Is it a welcome home hug, a medal of honor, or perhaps a G.I. bill for education? This is probably what most soldiers would want when they return home after serving their country. But the story for this war hero is different; his name is Walter Padilla. When he returned home from the war in Iraq, his rewards for serving his country were nights of sleep disorder and nightmares that haunted him. The disorder is called post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. He used to be an easy-going person, but after the war, he was a totally different person, as quoted by one of his best friends. Because of PTSD, his life fell apart, and he had no choice but to end his nightmare and, tragically, end his life with his handgun. It is a tragic suicide, and if our war hero did not have to go to war in Iraq, maybe he would still be alive and have a good life.

The death of Walter Padilla is one of the many reasons that suggest we shouldn't have gone to war with Iraq. Other reasons include the cost of war, the growth of anti-American beliefs, the safety of our citizens, the increasing number of deaths of innocent people, and the justification of invading a diminished power country, Iraq.

While many people were complaining about the steady increase in the cost of gasoline on a daily basis, others have not yet realized that it was one of the many factors that contributed to the cost of the war. When you go shopping in grocery stores, your bills might be slightly higher than usual. It is not because of a cashier's mistake; it is because many of the food and products we purchase are going up in price due to the inflation caused by the war. We pay taxes every year because we need to. Sometimes our tax money goes towards local school education funds or hurricane damage restoration. However, sometimes the money we contribute to the government is used to help and continue to destroy other countries, making our lives harder. Who knows what will increase again tomorrow because of the war? The money that we work hard for is being used for the wrong reasons.

How long does it take for you to check in at the airport? Is it 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, or even more? It is probably longer if you have been flying lately because, due to the war, security checks at airports have increased in levels. Want to take a vacation any time soon? Sure, but as long as the destination spot favors the Western world, why? Because there are many countries that don’t welcome Western tourists. If you check a global map, there are quite a few spots in the world that Westerners shouldn’t be visiting anytime soon. Ever since the American troops invaded Iraq, the hatred of the Western world has been on the rise. The Western culture was already not too well-received by Muslims, but after the war, their dislike for Western culture has grown even more. Besides religious Muslims, Westerners have also lost some friendly relationships with other countries due to the outbreak of war. Because of the war, many of our civilians feel more insecure every day, both within our homeland and outside our country's borders.

Ever since elementary school, we have been taught to count, whether it is the number of apples we eat, the grades we receive, or the steps we take. And what do we count now? The number of people who die, yes. Death was always a scary topic, but with the ongoing war, the number of people who have died during the war has kept increasing according to an article in the medical magazine "The Lancet." There has been an excess of 10,000 civilian deaths since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. These numbers include children and women who pose no threat to anyone. The number of soldiers who have died in war also continues to grow every day. In the last count, the number of deaths was 3,782, and the number won't stop if the war continues.

Many people have asked why we invaded Iraq in the first place. Was it because of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, or because Iraq had weapons of mass destruction? But the last time we checked, we have no hard concrete evidence linking the terrorist attacks to our troops. We have thoroughly searched the country from top to bottom and have found nothing that proves Iraq had any weapons of mass destruction. September 11, 2001, was a shocking historical event that changed our world. It affected each and every one of us in some way, but we should not have gone to war with Iraq because of that. Most people view the invasion as an act of vengeance rather than justice.

With more than 40% of our civilians not supporting the war, the opposition forces suggest that we should stop this and bring our troops home. Additionally, there is no true hard evidence linking the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, to Iraq. It is not justified to go to war with Iraq. Many of these soldiers have families and children, and when they are gone, who is going to support their loved ones? Iraq has been diminished, and their lack of weapons of mass destruction is evident. They are not a threat to anyone in the world, including America.
