I'm give the following data: Q*, QG, QH, QE for a 24-hour period, i'm required to plot these 4 data on the same graph, which I've already done. I'm also required to compute these 24 hours totals

- transfer of sensible heat to the atmomsphere
- transfer of latent heat to the atmosphere
- transfer of water to the atmosphere
-equivalent loss of stored soil liquid water
I'm not sure how to do this. Also, the surface enrgy balance states that Q*=QH+QG+QE, but the data do not satisfy this balance, eg. for hour 00, Q*=-70, QG=-16, QH=-90 and QE=16.
Please help. Thanks

To compute the 24-hour totals for the given data, you can follow these steps:

1. Transfer of Sensible Heat to the Atmosphere:
- Sum up all the values of QH (heating heat flux) over the 24-hour period.
- This will give you the total transfer of sensible heat to the atmosphere.

2. Transfer of Latent Heat to the Atmosphere:
- Sum up all the values of QE (evaporative heat flux) over the 24-hour period.
- This will give you the total transfer of latent heat to the atmosphere.

3. Transfer of Water to the Atmosphere:
- Sum up all the values of QE and divide by the latent heat of vaporization of water (denoted as Lv).
- This will give you the total transfer of water to the atmosphere.

4. Equivalent Loss of Stored Soil Liquid Water:
- Calculate the difference between Q* (net radiation) and the sum of QH, QG (ground heat flux), and QE.
- This will give you the equivalent loss of stored soil liquid water.

Regarding the surface energy balance equation, which states that Q* = QH + QG + QE, it should ideally hold true. However, if the data does not satisfy this balance, it suggests a problem with the measurements or accuracy of the data. In the example you provided, the numbers do not balance for the given hour (00).

To troubleshoot the discrepancy, you can review the data collection methods, check for any instrument errors or calibration issues that could have led to inaccurate readings. It's essential to ensure the data is reliable and accurate before drawing any conclusions.
