The IR spectrum of your lipid unknown shows a broad & strong absorption band at 3400, medium intensity bands at 3119 & 3086 and a set of bands at 1613,1586,1515 and 1465 cm-1
1) What functional group is present in your compound?
2) What classification tests would you run to verify your IR result.
3) The b.p. of your unknown was approximately 202-204 degree C. Its 3,5 dinitrobenzoate derivative melted at approximately 113 degree C. what was your unknown?

It's been so long since I've done any of this. But I would look for a ring structure with an OH group (phenol or alcohol). o-ethyl phenol has a boiling of 207 and the 3,5 dinitrobenzoate melts at 108. p-cresol and o-cresol have b.p. of 202 but the 3,5 dibnz doesn't fit either (m.p. 189 abd 165).
