This is one of the very best places I've seen online to help students write good thesis statements. It shows you sentences that aren't thesis statements and how to turn each one into a real thesis statement.

Just remember: Your thesis statement must include factual information plus your position/opinion/stance. Without your position on the topic, it isn't a true thesis statement. So think of this sentence as the angle you want to take on the topic and what you intend to prove by the end of your paper. (If your statement is simply factual, then there's nothing to prove!)

Once you think you have a thesis statement drafted, please re-post and someone here will be able to help you.

thanks so much

You're welcome. Be sure to post your thesis draft if you'd like someone here to critique it.

=)

Maya Angelou was a singer, actor, civil rights worker, journalist, and director. She was been through so much and has transcended into one of the world’s most famous authors. Out of all her past occupations, she is best known for her literary works.

Good start. The first sentence is all facts, right? The second and third sentences have mostly facts and a teensy bit of opinion. Now, ask yourself this: Would anyone argue with you about these statements? Would anyone else's opinion differ?

Also, you need to end up with ONE SENTENCE, not three, so start thinking about how you can combine the ideas AND how you can make your opinion stronger. Read these 5 tips and make it all much stronger:

Sure! I can help you with your annotated bibliography thesis for Maya Angelou. Before we get into the thesis statement, let's first understand what an annotated bibliography is.

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources (in this case, Maya Angelou's works) that provides a brief summary and evaluation of each source. The purpose of the annotations is to help readers understand the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources for your research paper.

Now let's move on to crafting your thesis statement for the annotated bibliography. The thesis statement should clearly communicate the main focus or argument of your research paper.

Here's an example thesis statement for an annotated bibliography on Maya Angelou:

"The annotated bibliography on Maya Angelou and her works explores the themes of empowerment, resilience, and identity through an examination of three of her influential works, namely 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,' 'Still I Rise,' and 'Phenomenal Woman.'"

Now, let's break down the elements of this thesis statement:

1. Subject: Maya Angelou and her works.
2. Main Themes: Empowerment, resilience, and identity.
3. Works to be Analyzed: 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,' 'Still I Rise,' and 'Phenomenal Woman.'

Remember, this thesis statement should align with the scope of your research paper and guide the selection of sources for your annotated bibliography.

To create your annotated bibliography, you'll need to gather relevant sources on Maya Angelou and her works. These sources can include books, articles, interviews, or other reputable materials. For each source, write a brief annotation summarizing the main points and evaluating the source's relevance to your research.

I hope this helps you in formulating your thesis and understanding how to approach your annotated bibliography. Good luck with your research paper!
