When the glucose solution described in part A is connected to an unknown solution via a semipermeable membrane, the unknown solution level rises. Based on this information, what can be said about these two solutions?

a.) The unknown solution had the lower concentration.
b.)The unknown solution had the higher concentration.
c.)The two solutions have the same concentration.

I'll say its A, since when u put in the soln, it rised, meaning it was lwoer in conc. but ive been wrong.

If the unknown solution level rises, then The unknown solution had the higher concentration.
If the unknown solution level drops, then The unknown solution had the lower concentration.

Beware of those who said answer from masteringchemistry, they might have question with 'drops' instead of 'rises'.

The solvent moves from the lower to the higher concn in osmosis. The way I look at it is that the solvent is trying to dilute the appropriate solution so that the pressure on the two sides of the semipermeable membrane will be equal. The solute can't move through the membrane (as a way of increasing the concn of the lower one) which leaves it up to the solvent to do its thing. It CAN move through the membrane so it tries to dilute the more concd solution.

The answer is B the unknown solution had a higher concentration to began with.

The correct answer is B! because Water flows from low to high concentration across a semi-permeable membrane.

The answer is B. I just did this on mastering and picked A and got it wrong.

the answer is B. the above was WRONG!!

As water flows out of the unknown solution, it is getting more and more concentrated. That means it had a lower concentration to begin with. The system will form an equilibrium where the two solutions have comparable concentrations depending on the pressure applied to each solution.

the right answer is A. the unknown solution has the lower concentration ...

I had this question on mastering chemistry. It's A.
