Lithium nitride reacts with water to form ammonia and aqueous lithium hydroxide.

Li3N(s) + 3H2O(l) > NH3(g) + 3LiOH(aq)

  1. 1) Balance the equation.
    It is already balanced.

    2) From the balanced equation, determine the mole ratios for the elements/compounds of interest.
    1 mole Li3N = 3 moles H2O

    3) Determine how many moles of one of the compounds you have.
You have 32.9 grams of Li3N. How many moles is that? To find out, multiply 32.9 grams by the reciprocal of the molar mass for the compound.
    32.9 g Li3N (1 mole Li3N / x grams)

    4) Multiply the moles you have for the first compound, by the mole ratio: this will tell you how many moles of the second compound you need.
