Imperfect = description = 3 English translations: él hablaba = he WAS speakING, he USED TO speak, he SPOKE. (note that the 3rd meaning crosses over with the Preterit.
Use the imperfect with time, age. Sometimes only the speaker can decide what kind of picture to paint. Preterit for "still shots" = / / / / / /
