Can you please explain this to me.

The problem is 7/16 - 3/20

First I have to find the common denominator which would be 80

How does the 7/16 become 35/80 (where does the 35 come from)
How does the 3/20 become a 12/80 (Where does the 12 come from)

35/80 minus 12/80

answer 23/80

7/16*5/5= 35/80

3/20 * 4/4= 12/80

I still don't get it???

What you don't understand it how to get a common denominator...

Certainly! To subtract fractions, you need to have a common denominator. In this case, the common denominator is 80.

To convert 7/16 to the denominator of 80, you need to find the equivalent fraction with 80 as the denominator. To do this, you can multiply the numerator and denominator of 7/16 by the same number. Since 16 multiplied by 5 equals 80, you would multiply both 7 and 16 by 5, giving you 35/80.

To convert 3/20 to the denominator of 80, you can follow the same process. In this case, you would multiply the numerator and denominator of 3/20 by 4. Since 20 multiplied by 4 equals 80, you would multiply both 3 and 20 by 4, resulting in 12/80.

Now that both fractions have the same denominator, you can subtract them. Subtracting the numerators gives you 35/80 - 12/80, which simplifies to 23/80.

Therefore, the answer to the problem 7/16 - 3/20 is 23/80.
