Can you let please me know the meaning of these lines I am not sure of?
"We Two Boys Together Clinging
Power enjoying—elbows stretching—fingers clutching....
No law less than ourselves owning—Misers, menials, priests alarming—air breathing, water drinking, on the turf or the sea-beach dancing..." (Walt Whitman)
How would you rephrase "together clinging", "fingers clutching and priests alarming" . I hope someone will help me.
Thanks

  1. Boys reaching for the future...arms outstretched for whatever is in store, making up their own "rules" as they grew into what they were to become.

When Whitman was writing much of society's rules of behavior was in the hands of the very wealthy or the church and those people who went solely by the word of both of those. These two boys are, like most of today's young people, going by their own rules of conduct.
