• Choose four of the emotional characteristics described on p. 375 of the text. For each of the chosen characteristics, identify what you believe is a healthy and appropriate emotional response for a child in infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Counter the acceptable behavior with an inappropriate display of emotion for each stage of development.

on page 375 the charactersitics are happiness, anger, fear, sadness, disgust, anxiety, shame, guilt and pride

so do i have to say something like Disgust occurs when people encounter food, smells and sights that they sense are unhealthful for them.

As I understand your assignment, you first choose four of these characteristics: happiness, anger, fear, sadness, disgust, anxiety, shame, guilt and pride.

Then, take each of the childhood stages and tell which of your four characteristics is an appropriate emotion and which is not.

To start you off:

Infancy
-- appropriate: happiness
-- inappropriate: shame

Early childhood

for early childhood could i use

pride and guilt

To answer the question, you will need to provide an appropriate emotional response for a child in each stage of development (infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence) for four of the emotional characteristics listed on page 375 of the text. You will also need to counter each appropriate response with an inappropriate display of emotion for each stage of development.

For example, let's consider the emotional characteristic of happiness:

Infancy (birth to 2 years):
Appropriate Emotional Response: A healthy and appropriate emotional response for an infant would be showing happiness through smiling, cooing, and giggling.
Inappropriate Emotional Response: An inappropriate display of emotion for an infant could be excessive crying and fussiness when everything seems fine.

Early Childhood (2 to 6 years):
Appropriate Emotional Response: A healthy and appropriate emotional response for a child in early childhood would be expressing happiness through play, laughter, and positive interactions with others.
Inappropriate Emotional Response: An inappropriate display of emotion for a child in early childhood could be extreme tantrums or uncontrollable laughter without reason.

Middle Childhood (6 to 12 years):
Appropriate Emotional Response: A healthy and appropriate emotional response for a child in middle childhood would be showing happiness through achievements, friendships, and engaging in activities they enjoy.
Inappropriate Emotional Response: An inappropriate display of emotion for a child in middle childhood could be excessive bragging or boasting about their accomplishments, disregarding others' achievements.

Adolescence (12 to 18 years):
Appropriate Emotional Response: A healthy and appropriate emotional response for an adolescent would be expressing happiness through personal accomplishments, social connections, and self-expression.
Inappropriate Emotional Response: An inappropriate display of emotion for an adolescent could be excessive partying, engaging in risky behaviors, and seeking immediate pleasure without considering consequences.

You can follow a similar format for the other emotional characteristics (anger, fear, sadness, disgust, anxiety, shame, guilt, and pride) for each stage of development. This will help you provide both an appropriate and inappropriate display of emotion for each stage.
