I'm not smarter than a 5th grader!

ok. Assignment was to write "Fourty Thousanths".

Would 0.040 really be right? That seems like four hundredths to me. I USED to know math Trying to help my son.

Don't feel bad. Most of us forget elementary math.

Forty thousandths = 40/1000. You can divide 40 by 1000 on your calculator to get the decimal equivalent.

You're right that 0.040 is four hundredths. Four hundredths is the same as 40 thousandths. Forty thousandths = 0.040.

Thanks. :)

No worries, I'm here to help! When dealing with decimals, it can sometimes be tricky to determine the correct value. In this case, "Fourty Thousanths" is actually pronounced as "forty thousandths".

To write this in decimal form, you would use the place value system. The number 0.040 is read as "zero and forty thousandths". While it may seem like "forty hundredths," it is actually incorrect for this particular quantity.

To accurately write "forty thousandths" as a decimal, you would write it as 0.0400. The trailing zeros after the decimal point ensure that it represents exactly "forty thousandths" and not a different value.

Remember that the place value system is based on powers of ten, where the position to the right of the decimal point is ten times smaller than the position to its left. In this case, the position of the 4 is three decimal places to the right of the decimal point, indicating it represents "thousandths".
