Since your assignment seems to be about the 50s, you should talk about the Korean War which started in 1950. We didn't get involved in Vietnam until late 1959.

These sites will help you.

this is what foud for the answer to How did the United States become involved in Southeast Asia?

----------------------------------------

•Inititally to assist its ally, France, in their struggle to maintain their colonial holdings in Vietnam.

•Subsequently, to honor treaty obligations with the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam).

•Involvement was thought to be necessary to prevent communism from taking control completely in that area (see The Domino Effect).

now i do not know what else to talk about it has to be 6-9 slides. i already talked about the domino theory.

Yes, you're right. I probably threw you off by suggesting you talk about the Korean War. However, since Korea is in east Asia, not southeast Asia, your assignment doesn't involve Korea.

This site, among those suggested by GuruBlue, explains in more detail how we got involved in southeast Asia.

You're definitely on the right track with your understanding of how the U.S. became involved in Southeast Asia. Here are a few additional points you can consider for your presentation:

1. Cold War context: The U.S. saw Southeast Asia as a crucial battleground in the global struggle against communism. The spread of communism in Asia, often referred to as the "domino effect," was believed to threaten U.S. interests and security.

2. The Truman Doctrine: The Truman Doctrine, announced in 1947, outlined the U.S. commitment to containing communism worldwide. This policy, along with the domino theory, played a significant role in justifying U.S. involvement and military assistance in Southeast Asia.

3. The Geneva Accords: The 1954 Geneva Conference divided Vietnam into Communist-controlled North Vietnam and anti-Communist South Vietnam. The U.S. played a role in these negotiations and subsequently supported the South Vietnamese government.

4. Gulf of Tonkin Incident: In 1964, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, where U.S. naval vessels were allegedly attacked by North Vietnamese forces, led to increased U.S. military intervention in Vietnam.

5. Public opinion and the media: The involvement in Southeast Asia and the Vietnam War provoked intense public debate and divided the U.S. political climate of the 1950s. Anti-war protests and the media's coverage of the conflict, including images of casualties and atrocities, further shaped public opinion and opposition to the U.S.'s role in the region.

For further research, consider looking into the specific policies and strategies implemented during the Vietnam War, such as the "strategic hamlet" program and the use of chemical defoliants like Agent Orange.

Remember to cite your sources and provide a balanced perspective in your presentation. Good luck!
