Suppose you have a friend named Ed. He and his four friends are having ice cream. There are only three flavors available at the ice cream store they are visiting: chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. One of Ed’s friends, Stacey, eats chocolate exclusively. How many different kinds of cones can they make? They may have only singles, doubles, and triples. Create one or more number sentences that would support your conclusions. Please be sure to thoroughly explain how you came to your conclusion.

What a confusing question.

I sure hope that the topic of permutations is not introduced this way.

For Stacey they could make 1x3 or 3 different cones
for each of the other 4 people they could make
3x3 or 9 ways.

But those 9 ways include the kind of cone that Stacey can have.

Since the question was, "How many different kinds of cones can they make?"

my answer would be
9 different kind of cones.
