List two to three characteristics of Orientalism. How may Orientalism and prejudice contribute to hate crimes against these groups?

Orientalism is not a term that's used by most people. It basically means anything connected with Asia. Remember that Asia includes a large number of diverse cultures and nations -- Japan, Russia, India, Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma), Afghanistan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Korea, China, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Turkey, etc. In my opinion, Orientalism has nothing to do with prejudice against Muslims and Arabs.

I think your Axia class is the only class in any college that uses Said's "Orientalism" as a source. It is not a mainstream book. I'd refuse to answer this question because it's a terribly biased and unsubstantiated source.

Check this site for more information.

I think this question is ridiculous it should at least tell where to find the information. Encarta built into my word program does not even recognize Orientalism as a word so that should tell us something.

Ms.Sue, are you suppose to be a teacher? how can you refuse to answer this question on Orientalism if you are a real teacher. This is a psychology class asking this question and it must be to hard for you to understand why they ask questions like this.

Ms. Sue has been very helpful on a number of questions posted on this site. Maybe this is just something she feels strongly about. Back off a little bit and try researching your work. People like Ms. Sue are here to give guidance and critique YOUR OWN work. There is no reason to be hateful.

Amanda she is not refusing the question because she does not understand it, or because she is just refusing. She is saying this answer is unfair and if she was that student she would refuse to answer the question because she believes is biased and kind of sounds like it is stereotyping those groups, which I would agree is not fair. She did give other sites to help the person if they needed to. She gave as much information as she could but I agree I would refuse to give an answer to this question because it seems so biased and just plain dumb sounding. However, maybe more clarification from the students actual teacher about the question asked might help, but I can't really tell.

Orientalism is a term coined by Edward Said to describe the way Western societies have historically depicted and represented the Middle East and other Eastern cultures. It often involves the portrayal of these cultures as exotic, mysterious, and irrational. Here are two to three characteristics of Orientalism:

1. Exoticization: Orientalism tends to present Eastern cultures as strange and alluring, emphasizing their differences and perpetuating stereotypes. It creates an image of the Eastern "other" as opposite and inferior to the West.

2. Generalizations and Stereotypes: Orientalism frequently relies on broad generalizations and stereotypes to classify and understand diverse Eastern cultures. It overlooks the complexities and diversity within these societies, leading to a distorted and simplified understanding.

3. Power Dynamics: Orientalism has historically been a tool used by the West to exert control and dominance over the East. It reinforces power asymmetries, portraying Western culture as superior and Eastern culture as subordinate.

The link between Orientalism, prejudice, and hate crimes against these groups is complex but significant. Here's how they contribute:

1. Othering and dehumanization: Orientalism creates a sense of "us versus them," portraying Eastern cultures as fundamentally different and exotic. This can lead to a dehumanizing effect, where individuals from these cultures are seen as less deserving of rights and empathy, making them more vulnerable to hate crimes.

2. Stereotyping and marginalization: Orientalist stereotypes can perpetuate negative assumptions and biases about individuals from Eastern cultures. These stereotypes often reinforce existing prejudices and marginalize these groups, making them targets for hate crimes.

3. Justification of violence: Orientalism can propagate the idea that certain measures, including hate crimes, are justified to protect Western societies from the perceived threats or dangers associated with Eastern cultures. This legitimizes and enables acts of violence and discrimination against these groups.

It is important to acknowledge that Orientalism is not the sole cause of hate crimes, but it can contribute to creating an environment where prejudice and discrimination against Eastern cultures are more likely to occur. To combat this, fostering cultural understanding, challenging stereotypes, and promoting equality are critical steps.
