How should I start an essay about myself?

One of the most effective ways I've taught and used to write anything autobiographical is to think of a time when you did something really meaningful:

~ made a major decision about your future
~ endured a painful time from which you learned some valuable lessons
~ suddenly came upon a scene of unexpected beauty (for me, it was when I went to the rim of Canyon de Chelly in Arizona)
~ etc.

Any experience like these makes you who you are, and often makes you a stronger person, too. So if you start with the experience -- told like a little story -- and then go on to analyze the effects on you, especially if it still affects you today, you could have a good strong essay.

To start an essay about yourself, you can begin by thinking about a significant experience or moment in your life. This could be a time when you made an important decision, went through a challenging period and learned valuable lessons, or encountered something unexpectedly beautiful or inspiring. Reflect on how this experience has shaped who you are and consider its ongoing impact on your life.

To start your essay, tell the story of this experience in a narrative style. Engage your readers by describing the scene, people involved, and any emotions or thoughts you had at the time. This will help grab their attention and make them interested in learning more about you.

After sharing the story, you can transition into analyzing the effects of this experience on your personal growth and development. Discuss how it has influenced your beliefs, values, and aspirations. Explain why it continues to hold significance for you and how it has shaped the person you are today.

Remember to stay focused on the main theme or message you want to convey in your essay. Use personal anecdotes, specific examples, and vivid descriptions to bring your story to life and connect with your readers. By starting with a meaningful experience and then analyzing its impact on you, you can create a strong and compelling essay about yourself.
