Tabitha is 18 yrs old and from a small and friendly Alabama town where people wave to each other and will stop to help someone in need. She has a scholarship to study medicine in Florida, and her parnets are driving her to school. Passing through Miami, they see a woman standing next to a car that seems to have run out of gas. They are appalled at the number of cars that have rushed by without stopping. When the woman waves at Tabatha's family, they stop to help her. Their car gets hijacked, and they are left on the side of the road without their belongings. Their decision to stop is an example of:

A) Cultural sensory deprivation

B) Lack of critical period formation

C) Sensory overload

D) A perceptual set.

I'm debating between (A) and (D) but more so (D) because perceptual set - tendency to perceive what you expect where as (A) Cultural Sensory Deprivation - directing our attn to what to notice or ignore.

What do you think?

Perceptual set theory stresses the idea of perception as an active process involving selection, inference and interpretation. Perceptual set is a bias or readiness to perceive certain aspects of available sensory data and to ignore others.

Answer D.

Cultural sensory deprivation is something that leads to intellectual and behavioral retardation. CSD results from lack of background in sensory perception, while most would think living in Alabama is bound to lead to such deprivation, others would argue against it, even those whose basic verbal communication consists of "roll tide".

This isn't an answer to your question but I wanted to point out that you have posted for the last two/three days with the same spelling of whatever word you are trying to spell. You must intend to spell either physiology or psychology but psychiology won't get it.

I would agree with both Bob and Dr. Bob. D is the best of those answers; however it is not the best answer.....and please learn how to spell the name of the subject you are taking.... your professor may take of points for not spelling the course name correctly.

i believe that it is neither- i dealt with a problem like this only yesterday- a family had stopped at the side of the road to feed a duck and their covered wagon (the vehicle in which they were traveling) was ridden away. i found out that this family had psychological problems and was hallucinating.

Based on the given information, the decision of Tabitha's family to stop and help the woman on the side of the road is more aligned with option D) A perceptual set.

Perceptual set refers to the tendency of individuals to perceive and interpret stimuli based on their own expectations, biases, and previous experiences. In this case, Tabitha's family comes from a small and friendly Alabama town where people are accustomed to waving at each other and stopping to help those in need. As a result, their perceptual set led them to interpret the woman waving at them as a signal for help and prompted them to stop.

On the other hand, option A) Cultural sensory deprivation refers to the intentional or unintentional restriction of certain sensory experiences due to cultural norms or practices. There is no indication in the given information that Tabitha's family's decision to stop was influenced by a lack of exposure to certain cultural sensory cues.

Therefore, the most appropriate choice is option D) A perceptual set.
