C/C between american slavery and encomienda system.

The encomienda system was a form of land ownership set up after 1492 to divide both the lands and peoples of the New World into workable pieces that were run by Spanish settlers. This system was abused. The Indians were worked like slaves, and the teaching of Christianity was dropped because it interfered with the profits of the Indians' forced labor. The practice, which was in practice a form of slavery, was officially outlawed in the 1550s.

Whenever you are writing a comparison/contrast paper (paragraph, essay, research paper), you need to plan it out very carefully on paper first.

Try this:

1. Write all the information about one of your topics on one page.
2. Write all the information about the other topic on another page.
3. Then put them together in this order:

1. Intro
2. All about topic A
~~~2A. detail 1
~~~2B. detail 2
~~~2C. detail 3
~~~2D. detail 4
~~~2E. detail 5
3. All about topic B
~~~3A. detail 1
~~~3B. detail 2
~~~3C. detail 3
~~~3D. detail 4
~~~3E. detail 5
4. Concl.

The number of details for each topic will vary depending on your main points. I would include comparisons (how they are similar) in the introduction and conclusion, but sections 2 and 3 and all those details will be stating and explaining how they are different.

There are two recognized patterns for writing comparison/contrast papers. One is casually referred to as "zig-zag,” but can be very confusing for the reader if you don’t use transitions effectively. The other is topic-by-topic (which is what I've outlined above) and is much easier for the reader to follow.

Certainly! Based on your description, there are a few similarities between American slavery and the encomienda system:

1. Forced labor: Both systems involved the exploitation of a certain group of people through forced labor. In the case of American slavery, African people were enslaved and made to work on plantations and in various industries. In the encomienda system, Indigenous people were forced to work on Spanish-owned lands.

2. Lack of rights: Under both systems, the enslaved individuals or encomienda laborers had limited or no rights. They were considered property or commodities, rather than free human beings with any form of agency or autonomy.

3. Abusive treatment: Both American slavery and the encomienda system involved harsh and inhumane treatment of the enslaved or encomienda laborers. This included physical abuse, inadequate living conditions, and limited access to basic needs or resources.

4. Systematic exploitation: Both systems were designed to benefit the ruling class or the European colonizers. The labor of enslaved Africans and Indigenous peoples was used to generate wealth and resources for the enslavers or encomenderos.

However, it's important to note that there are also some differences between American slavery and the encomienda system:

1. Legal status: American slavery was a legally recognized institution in the United States, with laws and regulations specifically created to maintain and enforce slavery. In contrast, the encomienda system was not officially recognized as slavery, though it shared many of its characteristics.

2. Race-based slavery: American slavery was largely based on racial distinctions, with Africans and their descendants being the primary targets. In the encomienda system, while Indigenous people were the main labor force, it was not solely based on race, as there were instances where African or mixed-race individuals were also subjected to the system.

3. Geographical scope: American slavery developed primarily in the Southern United States, while the encomienda system was implemented in the Spanish colonies across the Americas.

To further expand your understanding, I would recommend researching specific historical examples of the encomienda system and American slavery, as well as their lasting impacts on societies and cultures.
