The reason I ask that is because my grand father is a medical doctor and he doesn't know the answer.

He thought someone might take a shot at answering.

I think it depends on the patient and the severity of the disease. I have emphysema and was given Advair and singular for asthma. The best treatment however is to quit smoking immediately if you do. I quite smoking almost 6 months ago immediately after learning that I had emphysema and I feel fine. I still get short of breath but keeping active is another good way of strengthening the lungs and keeping healthy. If you are depressed about it join a support group. I understand they can be very helpful in coping with the diseases involved.
