A plane takes off from an aiport and flies east at a speed of 350 mi/h. Ten minutes later, a second plane takes off from the same airport and flies east at a higher altitude at a speed of 400 mi/h. How long does it take the second plane to overtake the first plane?

I have tried to figure this out but it is hard when the teacher didn't teach it to you and tells you "do your best"
Help would be appreciated so much!

IT requires thinking. They flew the same distance, one had a ten min heard start.

distance1=350*t t in hrs
distance2=400(t-10/60)

set them equal, solve for t. Then, the second plane must fly t-10/60 hr

thanks. i had that but instead of subtracting i was adding for some reason.

a=6,b=8

3*4

To solve this problem, you can set up a distance formula using the information given and solve for the time it takes the second plane to overtake the first plane. Here's how you can break it down step by step:

1. Let's call the time it takes for the second plane to overtake the first plane "t" (in hours).
2. Since the first plane flies for 10 minutes (or 10/60 hours) before the second plane takes off, the first plane would have covered a distance of (350 * (10/60)) miles when the second plane takes off.
3. Let D represent the distance covered by the second plane when it overtakes the first plane.
4. The speed of the second plane is 400 mi/h, so the distance covered by the second plane in time "t" is 400t miles.
5. The distance covered by the first plane in time "t" is (350 * (t + 10/60)) miles.
6. Since the second plane overtakes the first plane, the distance covered by the first plane and the second plane must be equal. So, we set up an equation: 400t = 350 * (t + 10/60).
7. Solving this equation will give us the value of "t" - the time it takes for the second plane to overtake the first plane.

To solve the equation:

8. Simplify the equation: 400t = 350 * (t + 1/6).
9. Distribute 350 to t + 1/6: 400t = 350t + (350/6).
10. Combine like terms: 400t - 350t = 350/6.
11. Simplify the left side: 50t = 350/6.
12. Divide both sides by 50: t = (350/6) / 50.
13. Calculate t: t = 7/60 hours.

So, the second plane will overtake the first plane after 7 minutes.
