quick question,

how do i structure the following.

Compare and contrast ferns and agiosperms.

A) talk about their reproductive success
B)explain how they are dispersed to different habitats

intro; background on ferns. Then some stuff about angiosperms being the most diverse group of plants.

similarities.

both are similar since they have a sporophyte dominant life cycle. Ferns...Then, angiosperms....

Difference 1) Reproductive success is enhanced for angiosperms since they have sperm that don't need water to fertilize eggs. Ferns in contrast need water to fertilize... In contrast, the success of angiosperms is due to them not needing water to fertilize eggs...Angiosperms develop pollen explain process...pollen is transfer to stamens by wind or animals rather than water. This increases reproductive success.

differnce 2) angiosperms are dispersed over a wide variety of habitats. Ferns are restricted to water... Angiosperms have seeds. Seeds provide a protection. They also allow angiosperms membranes to remain dormant till conditions are favorable. Also, they have fruit. Animals and stuff disperse seeds over a wide variety of habitats.

Conclusions. The success of angiosperms is due to their ability to colonize a wide variety of habitats. Ferns are restricted to water...Angiosperms success is due to their independence from water environments.

Is this a typical way to structure this type of essay ? or should i keep all the ideas separate ?

Whenever you are writing a comparison/contrast paper (paragraph, essay, research paper), you need to plan it out very carefully on paper first.

Try this:

1. Write all the information about one of your topics on one page.
2. Write all the information about the other topic on another page.
3. Then put them together in this order:

1. Intro
2. All about topic A
~~~2A. detail 1
~~~2B. detail 2
~~~2C. detail 3
~~~2D. detail 4
~~~2E. detail 5
3. All about topic B
~~~3A. detail 1
~~~3B. detail 2
~~~3C. detail 3
~~~3D. detail 4
~~~3E. detail 5
4. Concl.

The number of details for each topic will vary depending on your main points. I would include comparisons (how they are similar) in the introduction and conclusion, but sections 2 and 3 and all those details will be stating and explaining how they are different.

There are two recognized patterns for writing comparison/contrast papers. One is casually referred to as "zig-zag,” but can be very confusing for the reader if you don’t use transitions effectively. The other is topic-by-topic (which is what I've outlined above) and is much easier for the reader to follow.

Once you have organized your information, please repost if you’d like feedback from someone here.

thanks never would have thought to structure it like that.

The structure you have outlined for your essay is generally appropriate for a compare and contrast essay. You have provided an introduction, established some background information, and then proceeded to discuss the similarities and differences between ferns and angiosperms based on the two aspects you mentioned: reproductive success and dispersal to different habitats.

Your introduction sets the stage by providing a brief background on ferns and highlighting the diversity of angiosperms. This gives the reader an idea of what to expect in the essay.

You then move on to discussing the similarities between the two groups, specifically their sporophyte-dominant life cycles. This establishes a basis for comparison and allows for a smoother transition to the differences.

For the differences, you have identified two key points: reproductive success and dispersal to different habitats. You have explained each difference in detail and provided examples to support your points. This helps the reader understand the specific characteristics that contribute to the reproductive success of angiosperms and their ability to colonize various habitats.

Finally, you conclude by summarizing the main differences and emphasizing the importance of angiosperms' ability to thrive in a wide range of environments.

Overall, your essay structure effectively presents the similarities and differences between ferns and angiosperms based on the specified criteria. This structure allows for a clear and organized presentation of information, making it easier for the reader to follow your arguments.
