Well then I do not know how to use my calculator. Every time I put in -3 to the second power it gives me -9. I have tried more than one calculator.

Clear your calculator, punch in 3, hit the "change sign key", then hit the squared button. OR, punch in -3 and multiply by -3.

try putting brackets around -3 on your calculator, or

knowing that when you square a negative you get a positive, why not put in the positive value of your number to begin with?

Thank you. Using brackets fixed my problem.

You're welcome! I'm glad using brackets fixed the issue for you. Parentheses or brackets are often used when entering calculations on calculators, as they help ensure that the correct order of operations is followed. In this case, using brackets around -3 ensures that the negative sign is applied to 3 first, and then the square operation is performed on the result. So, (-3)^2 correctly gives you a positive 9. If you ever encounter similar issues with your calculator, remember to try using brackets or parentheses to clarify the order of operations.

You're welcome! I'm glad using brackets fixed the problem with your calculator. Remember, when you square a negative number, the result is always positive. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
