Hey guys,

Uhm I need to analyse presidental speeches(two alltogether) in english. Which basically means I need to analyse two similar speeches and see how the presidents attempt to convince the audience(I think that covers my assignment basically^^)
So like....
oWhy does he use 'we' and stuff.

Now I am originally from denmark so I really have my problems with deep english language. And when it comes to presidental speeches...meh seriously.

Anyway I tried to google it but only found analysis of what he says not what kind of language was used.

But I need an in depth analysis of the english language techniques.
Please I'm kind of desperatehere.
Any help? Or ideas? Please?
Cheers
DarkDevil

No sadly not. I've googled every possible thing.

And to the 'we' part...I do understand why he does it but putting it into the right words is a bit hard.
Because in my year a normal english translation isn't enough. I have to throw in formal words and phrases.

All I am looking for is an example of how I could do it. An idea where I could lean on.

Hi DarkDevil,

Analyzing presidential speeches can be an interesting and challenging task. Understanding the language techniques used in these speeches can provide valuable insights into how presidents communicate their ideas and persuade their audience. Here are some steps you can follow to conduct an in-depth analysis of the English language techniques employed in presidential speeches:

1. Choose two presidential speeches: Select two speeches by different presidents or the same president at different times. Look for speeches where persuading the audience is a primary objective.

2. Read and listen to the speeches: Read the transcripts of the speeches while simultaneously listening to the audio or watching the video if available. Pay close attention to the speaker's tone, pauses, and emphasis.

3. Identify persuasive techniques: Look for language techniques used to establish rapport with the audience, enhance credibility, and appeal to emotions. Some common persuasive techniques include:

- Use of inclusive pronouns: Look for the use of pronouns like "we," "our," and "us," which help create a sense of unity and shared goals between the speaker and the audience.

- Rhetorical questions: Observe if the speaker uses questions that are not meant to be answered but rather to make a point or engage the audience.

- Repetition: Note if the speaker repeats certain words or phrases for emphasis or to reinforce key messages.

- Metaphors and analogies: Check if the speaker uses figures of speech to make abstract concepts more relatable or memorable.

- Emotional appeals: Look for instances where the speaker appeals to emotions by using vivid language, personal stories, or evocative imagery.

- Call to action: See if the speech includes a clear call to action, urging the audience to take a specific course of action.

4. Take notes and compare the speeches: As you analyze each speech individually, note down specific examples of the persuasive techniques used. Pay attention to similarities and differences between the speeches in terms of language and rhetorical strategies employed.

5. Supplement your analysis with research: To deepen your understanding, consult scholarly articles, books, or online resources on rhetoric and persuasive language techniques. These resources can provide further insights and analysis specific to presidential speeches.

Remember, analyzing presidential speeches takes time and practice. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need more specific guidance or have further questions. Good luck with your assignment!
