In today's world how many people do you think would be willing to give up everything just to experience the pain and suffering of others?

This is pertaining to my Religions of the World class-relating to Buddha.

I know some mothers who would rather suffer pain themselves than see their child suffer.

But on the whole -- almost no one would be will to give up everything to alleviate the pain and suffering of anyone outside the immediate family.

I beg to differ.... there are many people who give up time and money to help others. I have an 18 year old neighbor who is working in the slums of Philidelphia for this year. She had the choice of that or a college scholarship. One of the unique character traits of Americans is that they know how to "neighbor". Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten across those mountains and rivers on the way west.

IT depends on what kind of pain and suffering, I think.

Determining the exact number of people willing to give up everything to experience the pain and suffering of others is difficult as it would require extensive research and data gathering. However, I can provide you with some general insights and information related to the religious beliefs and teachings of Buddha, which can help you understand more about compassion and empathy in Buddhism.

Buddhism emphasizes the importance of compassion (karuna) and alleviating the suffering of others. Buddha taught that suffering is a universal human experience and one should strive to develop compassion towards all living beings. The central concept in Buddhism is the idea of "dukkha," which refers to the inherent suffering in life. The goal is to attain enlightenment and transcend this suffering.

However, it's important to note that Buddhism does not advocate seeking out or deliberately inflicting pain and suffering on oneself or others. Buddhism encourages understanding suffering and developing empathy as a means to cultivate compassion, rather than directly experiencing it.

To explore this topic further for your Religions of the World class, I recommend delving into the teachings of Buddha, such as the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. Additionally, studying Buddhist texts and scriptures, such as the Dhammapada or the Buddhist Sutras, can provide further insights into the concepts of compassion and suffering in Buddhism.
