I recently took a religion final and scored a 99.8% I think the question I got wrong is:

What is an apologist?
a- one who apologizes for sins
b- an apostle
c- some kind of writer???about???(I can't really remember this one)
d- ????(can't remember)

I put a- one who apologizes for sins, but I really don't know, because it wasn't in our textbooks, tests, or notes. My friend thinks it's b- an apostle, but how do you getr that out of apologist? I figured apologist has the word apology in it. Am I right? I mean, I hope you understand it's really bothering me; how do you get a 99.8? What did I do wrong?
Thanks in advance...

An apologist uses scriptures or logic to explain and defend religious beliefs. It has nothing to do with apologizing

so, do you think the answer could be b- apostle, then?

Not necessarily. It's probably c or d, but you have not defined them

I refer you to this definition of apologetics.

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01618a.htm

I do know that d was something totally ridiculous, but c was something like a person that writes about the sacraments of ???
yeah, so if it has nothing to do with apologizing or writing, and it is not that ridiculous d answer, it must be an apostle

Most church apologists are not apostles. I would not choose that answer

I chose a- one who apologizes for sins.
Wouldn't this info. from that site back me up?
Apologetics means, broadly speaking, a form of apology.
"Apologetic",
In defining apologetics as a form of apology,
Such, for example, is the Apology of Socrates,

No. Apologists defend the doctrine and practices of a church or cult or particular philosopher (e.g. Socrates). Creationists and "intelligent design" promoters, among others, would be considered apologists today. They are primarily writers, as in (c).

Go ahead and make your choice. You can presumably find out then right answer later.

thank you

Thank you for using the Jiskha Homework Help Forum. In the dictionary, here is the definition for "apologist:" one who speaks or writes in defense of someone or something

So far it looks like (c) but if you can't remember (d) it's impossible to tell! Someone else in your class may remember.

Just seconding what was said.

In Acts 26:2, it has Paul saying:

"King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews"

The word "defense" in Greek is "apologia." The word "apology" comes from the same word, but means something different.

So, in Theology, an Apologist is someone who defends the Christian Faith.

if its a religion question i would go with the mysterious c) because it seems to be closer to the answer your looking for :)
each time you have multiple answers ALWAYS cross out the ones you KNOW are not right. For example: you know its not b, you know its not the ridiculous d, and according to the definition its not a. so that leaves you with c. Rest assured my dear scholar.

:)

I swear (to God) d was absoutely out there, and in no way shape or form a possible answer. I am positive that c is a writer about the sacraments though.

If someone's writing about the sacraments, there's a good chance they are explaining them or defending them. So it was PROBABLY c. But hard to tell without actually seeing the actual questions and answers.

Matt

ok, I'll just forget about it then. But I wasn't the only student that had issues with that question!=)

Sometimes, teachers make accidents on the tests too. Maybe they'll realize they phrased something wrong and just give everyone credit for it :)

Let us know how it turns out.

Based on the information provided, it is likely that the correct answer to the question "What is an apologist?" is option c - a writer. An apologist is someone who uses scriptures or logic to explain and defend religious beliefs. They are primarily writers who defend the doctrine and practices of a church or cult, or a particular philosopher. Apologists are not apostles or individuals who apologize for sins.

To arrive at the correct answer, it is important to eliminate options that are clearly incorrect. In this case, option a (one who apologizes for sins) is eliminated because an apologist does not apologize for sins. Option b (an apostle) is also removed given that most church apologists are not apostles. Option d is described as something ridiculous, but since the exact definition is not known, it is difficult to determine if it is a correct answer.

Considering the available information, option c (some kind of writer) is the most likely correct answer for the question. However, it is always best to check with the teacher or refer to the course materials for confirmation. It is possible that the question was phrased ambiguously, resulting in confusion among students.
