I looked and could not find anything on iron smelting? Could you explain to me why it is a chemical process?

Iron ore is a chemical compound, it has to be decomposed into iron + other.

Surely you jest!!! I went to www.google.com and typed in Iron smelting and got over 1 million hits. The first three were all I needed to use. Try again please. Iron smelting is the reduction of iron ore, usually as the oxide, to iron. So we start with iron oxide and reduce it to iron. We had Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 or FeO and reduce it to Fe. That is a chemical change because we have changed the composition of the material in the process. Any carbon there is converted to CO2 (another chemical change) etc. I hope this helps. Please go to google and learn to use it. It will be well worth your time.

I am made up of oxygen and iron my chemical symbol is Fe02

I apologize if my previous response was not clear. Iron smelting is indeed a chemical process, and here's an explanation of why.

Iron smelting is the process of extracting iron metal from iron ore. Iron ore is a compound, typically an iron oxide, which needs to be decomposed into pure iron. This decomposition is achieved through a process called reduction.

During iron smelting, iron ore (which can be in the form of Fe2O3, Fe3O4, or FeO) is heated in the presence of a carbon source (such as coke or charcoal) in a furnace. The carbon source acts as a reducing agent.

The chemical equation for the reduction of iron ore, using carbon as a reducing agent, can be represented as follows:
Fe2O3 + 3C → 2Fe + 3CO

In this equation, Fe2O3 represents iron oxide, C represents carbon, Fe represents iron, and CO represents carbon monoxide.

As the iron ore is heated and reacts with the carbon, the carbon reduces the iron oxide, producing pure iron metal. Simultaneously, carbon is oxidized to carbon monoxide. This oxidation of carbon is another chemical change occurring during the smelting process.

Therefore, iron smelting involves a series of chemical transformations, including the reduction of iron oxide and the oxidation of carbon, resulting in the production of iron and carbon monoxide. This is why iron smelting is considered a chemical process.
