The equation y=1777x27,153 can be used to predict the number of gun deaths in the US x years after 2000 that is x=o corresponds with 2000 x=3 corresponds to 2003 etc Predict the number of gun deaths in 2005 and 2009 In what year will the number of gun deaths be 9,383?

I have the number of gun deaths in 2005=36,038

2009=43,146 I think these are too high but I followed the equation to arrive at these numbers. Have I made a mistake? I cannot figure the 9,383 number into a year after 2000.Can anyone help me?

Check your equation again and see if you typed it correctly.

the equation is y= -1777x+27153 I did enter the equation wrong by leaving out the signs. Can you help me with the Train A and Train B problem listed in Current problems as well?

I figured it out after your suggestion of checking to see if I had written the equation properly. But I still could use some help with the train problem. Thanks so much

To predict the number of gun deaths using the given equation, y = 1777x + 27,153, we can substitute the values of x and calculate the corresponding values of y.

1. Predicting the number of gun deaths in 2005:
First, we need to find the value of x for the year 2005. The equation states that x = 0 corresponds to 2000, so each subsequent year increments x by 1. Therefore, for 2005, x = 2005 - 2000 = 5.
Now substitute x = 5 into the equation:
y = 1777(5) + 27,153
y = 8,885 + 27,153
y = 36,038
Thus, the predicted number of gun deaths in 2005 would be 36,038.

2. Predicting the number of gun deaths in 2009:
Following the same steps, we find x = 2009 - 2000 = 9 for 2009.
Substitute x = 9 into the equation:
y = 1777(9) + 27,153
y = 15,993 + 27,153
y = 43,146
Therefore, the predicted number of gun deaths in 2009 would be 43,146.

3. Finding the year when the number of gun deaths is 9,383:
We need to solve the equation for x when y = 9,383.
9,383 = 1777x + 27,153
1777x = 9,383 - 27,153
1777x = -17,770
x = -17,770 / 1777
x ≈ -9.99
Since x represents the number of years after 2000, we round it up to the nearest whole number to find the corresponding year. Therefore, the predicted year when gun deaths will be around 9,383 is 2000 - 9 ≈ 1991. However, it is important to note that this result is not realistic since it predicts a negative number of years before 2000. Double-checking the equation or considering its limitations may be necessary in this case.

Remember, the provided equation is just a prediction model based on available data, so the actual gun death numbers could differ.
