Once you defragment a computer, do you lose files in your history or bookmarks or anywhere?

If that's true, is there any way to get them back?

Defragging should not erase any of those types of files. Only when you use specific delete commands or use the Disk Cleanup function does any of that happen ... and then not to everything.

It's available for every version of Windows, not just W2K.

=)

Thanks, my comp teacher said to try it, but I didn't understand what exactly it did, and I was afraid that it would permanently delete my important files.

No, defragmenting your computer will not delete any files in your history or bookmarks or anywhere else. Defragmentation is a process that reorganizes the data on your hard drive to improve its efficiency and performance. It moves fragmented files closer together and rearranges them in a more sequential order. This helps your computer access the files faster, but it does not delete any of your files.

If you have important files that you accidentally deleted or lost for some other reason, there are ways to recover them. You can try using file recovery software or contacting a professional data recovery service. These methods can help you retrieve lost files, but it's important to note that the success of the recovery depends on various factors such as the specific circumstances of the data loss and how long ago it occurred.

Defragmentation is a process that reorganizes the files on your computer's hard drive to improve efficiency and performance. It does this by moving fragmented files and organizing them in a more contiguous manner.

When you defragment your computer, it does not delete or erase any files, including your browsing history, bookmarks, or any other personal data. The process only rearranges the existing files on your hard drive for better optimization.

In the rare case that you do encounter data loss or file corruption during the defragmentation process, there are ways to potentially recover the lost files. You can use data recovery software to scan your hard drive and attempt to recover the deleted files. However, it's important to note that this is not a guaranteed solution, and it's always a good idea to have a backup of your important files before performing any maintenance tasks on your computer.

To summarize, defragmentation does not erase any files or data, but in the unlikely event of data loss, you may be able to recover them using data recovery software.
