Many young men (and a few women) have benefited from military teaching self-discipline, gaining some perspective in their lives and getting control of goals.
The GI Bill, and its follow-on programs, have benefited many individuals greatly.
The In-service education offered to active military (and in some cases, family) offers opportunities for self-improvement that these individuals would not have otherwise been allowed.
Some have benefited from military technical schooling and training, but more importantly, individuals have gained confidence that they can successfully learn.
Many families benefit from the opportunity to travel, to be exposed to other cultures, and bring that exposure and tolerance for others to our communities.
The US benefits from having a base of citizens who understand social and community responsibility.
Now there are negatives, but you didn't ask.
