I'm reviewing my notes for my final this week and there are a couple of gaps.

1. What countries (if any) today practice fascism?

2. I have something in my notes about dictators and I have Papa Doc and Baby Doc in parenthesis. What country are they associated with?

3. Examples of Procedural and Substantive Democracy. I think the U.S. is Substantive, but is there an example for procedural?

4. An umbrella IGO is where states use the organization to pursue national interests. Is there an example of that?

I appreciate any help at all.
Amy :)

Since this is not my area of expertise, I searched Google under the key words "'Papa Doc' 'Baby Doc'" to get these possible sources:

http://www.moreorless.au.com/killers/duvalier.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Claude_Duvalier

Under "Fascism today," I found:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism_Today
http://www.tpromo.com/jcfa/fascism.htm
http://www.rapidresponsereport.com/briefingpapers/FASCISM.pdf
http://www.thinkequal.com/page.cfm/link=38

There are more sites available, if you want to extend the search.

You can find the rest of the information you desire, if you use appropriate key words to do your own search.

I hope this helps. Thanks for asking.

If you read this site you will find the answer to the third question.

At this site scroll down to a list of IGOs... you will find appropriate groups.

1. To find out which countries practice fascism today, you can search for reliable sources such as news articles, government reports, or academic studies. Start by using search engines like Google and enter keywords such as "countries practicing fascism today" or "modern fascist regimes." Make sure to critically evaluate the sources and cross-reference information to ensure reliability. Some potential sources that may provide insights include official government statements, reports from human rights organizations, and scholarly research articles.

2. Papa Doc and Baby Doc are associated with Haiti. To confirm this information, you can use search engines and enter keywords like "Papa Doc Baby Doc Haiti" or "Duvalier dictatorship Haiti." This should lead you to sources such as historical records, academic sources, or reputable news articles that provide more information about their rule in Haiti.

3. Procedural democracy refers to a political system that focuses on the procedures and institutions that facilitate citizen participation in decision-making, such as elections and the rule of law. On the other hand, substantive democracy emphasizes achieving outcomes and policies that promote equality, justice, and the well-being of citizens. While the classification of countries into purely procedural or substantive democracy can be subjective, some scholars suggest that the United States is an example of a substantive democracy due to its commitment to individual rights and social justice.

For an example of procedural democracy, one possible suggestion could be Switzerland, known for its direct democracy system and frequent referendums. Swiss citizens have the power to directly vote on major legislative decisions, demonstrating a high level of citizen participation in the decision-making process.

4. An example of an umbrella intergovernmental organization (IGO) where states use the organization to pursue national interests is the United Nations (UN). The UN is composed of member states that collaborate on global issues, but each member state ultimately acts in its own national interest. The UN provides a platform for states to discuss and negotiate various issues, allowing them to pursue their national interests within the framework of international cooperation.
