Population (of 5 races)= 3,000,000

White population accounts for 80% of total population.

Whites arrested = 17,000

Black population accounts for 10% of total population.

Blacks arrested = 7,000

Im trying to explain the disparity in arrests (Whites vs. Blacks).

How would you go about doing this? I tried to use easier numbers, although my numbers are totally different.

Say total amount of arrests (of 5 races) is 20,000. Particular emphasis on White and Blacks arrests though.

Thanks, Alicia

Your math is wrong somewhere.

If there are 17,000 whites arrested and 7,000 blacks arrested, then the total of arrests just in these two races is 24,000. Your number of 20,000 won't work.

Test out these numbers to make sure I'm figuring them right --

Total population = 3,000,000
Whites = 2,400,000 (80%)
Blacks = 300,000 (10%)

So ... %age of whites arrested among white population = .708%
and ... %age of blacks arrested among black population = 2.3333%

Whites arrested (out of the total population) = .5666%
Blacks arrested (out of the total population) = .23333%

So when considered in the whole population, the disparity between blacks and whites doesn't show up as clearly, but when you consider white arrests among just the whites and black arrests among just the blacks, the disparity is very clear.

Yes? No?

Some math teachers here may have some corrections and/or other ideas to make.

Thank you for all your help.

84.9% White pop.

3,500,000 Total pop.

How many people is 84.9%?

Can you show me the steps?

You are really saying 84.9% of 3,500,000 is the white population. Any time you run into the word "of" like this, it means to multiply. So ...

3500000 x .849 = 2971500

=)

And remember to convert a % type of number into its decimal form:

84.9% = 0849

.708% = 0.00708

2.3333% - 0.023333

(Move the decimal point to the left two places.)

I have no further questions. You and the others helped me significantly. Although the numbers I typed on here are not the same ones I need to use for my paper, at least I am now familiar with the steps to get the correct answer. It is sad how I used to know this simple math and look at me now ... I needed a refresher course. Once again, I appreciate your help.

Thanks and regards,

Alicia

84.9% = 0849 <~~wrong!

84.9% = 0.849 <~~right!!

:o)

It's not sad...it is normal. But the most important thing about math is not necessarily getting the right answers. The important thing is how math, if learned properly, teaches you how to think. (Not that teachers want you to get the wrong answer either....)

I didn't follow this thread too closely (it already looked resolved by the time I got to it), but it looks like you had your own ideas on it and just needed a small reminder or two of math rules to help clarify it. So it seems you really did remember the important stuff as far as math's main goal.

To explain the disparity in arrests between whites and blacks, we need to consider the proportion of arrests relative to the total population of each race.

First, let's calculate the total population for each race based on the given proportions:

Total population = 3,000,000
White population = 80% of total population = 0.8 * 3,000,000 = 2,400,000
Black population = 10% of total population = 0.1 * 3,000,000 = 300,000

Next, let's calculate the percentage of whites and blacks arrested within their respective populations:

Percentage of whites arrested among white population = (Number of white arrests / White population) *100
Percentage of whites arrested = (17,000 / 2,400,000) * 100 = 0.708%

Percentage of blacks arrested among black population = (Number of black arrests / Black population) * 100
Percentage of blacks arrested = (7,000 / 300,000) * 100 = 2.333%

Now, let's calculate the overall percentage of whites and blacks arrested in the total population:

Percentage of whites arrested (out of total population) = (Number of white arrests / Total population) * 100
Percentage of whites arrested = (17,000 / 300,000) * 100 = 0.5667%

Percentage of blacks arrested (out of total population) = (Number of black arrests / Total population) * 100
Percentage of blacks arrested = (7,000 / 300,000) * 100 = 0.2333%

When considered in the whole population, the disparity between blacks and whites does not show up as clearly. However, when you consider white arrests among just the white population and black arrests among just the black population separately, the disparity becomes evident.
