Fiona spent 1/4 of her monthly salary on clothes and 2/3 of the remaining on shoes. She saved 1/4 of what was left and spent the rest on groceries. She spent $437.50 more on shoes than on groceries.

    shoes: 2/3 * 3/4 = 1/2
    saved: 1/4 * 1/4 = 1/16
    groceries: 3/16
    so, if she started with $x, we now have
    1/2 x = 3/16 x + 437.50
    x = $1400
